Day 4/5 Microfracture recovery update
Yesterday, I spent the day watching football.
It was nice to have that as a distraction from sitting around all day in boredom because instead of boredom I had football. I woke up at 730, I can never seem to sleep in past that anyway. My wife, who has been nothing short of extraordinary, helped me get up, dress, pee pee poo poo, and made breakfast--mmmmpancakesmmmm. Then I spent the morning tinkering my lineups on Draftkings, I felt pretty good about them- always do.
I guess it was a pretty uneventful day, sat on the couch consuming sports, ate whatever my wife fed me. The only issue we have is that our bathrooms are both I on the upstairs floor, so for me to use them I would have to crutch up and down the steps. Crutching has gotten easier but the stairs are still the scariest part, even if things have gone relatively uneventfully. My wife, being an RN, has access to disposable urinals which she empties and rinses for me. That has been a gamechanger.
Today (day 5), I woke up and started the whole process today but I actually "showered" too. I can't take conventional showers because the wound cannot get wet, I'm non weight bearing, and I'm (more my wife) is scared of my slipping in the tub. So we have resorted to sponge baths-- did I mention how great she is? She soaps me, rinses me, and I dry myself. We actually bought a small shower chair which has come up clutch prior to the surgery. That, the urinal, and the extra icepacks I bought have all been in heavy rotation for me. I think another important thing are shorts with pockets because when you crutch you can't hold stuff. I know it's a small detail but its something I realize is important now. I continue to feel useless and I can see some frustration setting in for more wife. In the first time since COVID I think she's actually looking forward to going into work.
I have my first post-op appointment tomorrow. I am pumped to get out of the house first of all, but also to see how things are progressing. My knee has had a dressing over it covered by an ACE bandage along with a stiff brace which has kept me in 180 degree extension since the surgery. I want to know what the physical therapy will be like from here and will update the blog with all of the information I acquire. I've been recently thinking about pulling the trigger on a Peloton so I'll see what the doctor says about that. The pain has been pretty minimal outside the occasional pain when I reshuffle my leg on pillows to keep it elevated. Hope it stays this way.
